" VeloVegan " is an amalgamation of the words velocipede and vegan
... with some love in the middle ;)

Velocipede is the original word for bicycle and it meant: a lightweight wheeled vehicle propelled by the rider. It was a machine invented in France, which originally had two wheels, no pedals, and the rider propelled it using his/her feet. In 1869, J.T. Goddard, in his book "The Velocipede. It's History, Varieties and Practice", said the following: "Riding the velocipede affords pleasurable excitement, which is what most men drink liquor for, and it leaves no sting behind. It takes men from the bar-rooms out into the pure air, into God's light and sunshine, and braces their lungs with the very breath of Heaven. It stimulates them to save what they would otherwise spend foolishly, that they may invest it in a machine which is a source of health and pleasure, as well as of utility."

The word Vegan was coined, in a joint effort, by Donald & Dorothy Watson in 1944. Donald Watson created The Vegan Society on the 1st November of that year. Their definition of veganism reads:

" Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude,
as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of
exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food,
clothing or any other purpose. "

That's us ... the VeloVegans ... hope you'll come along for the ride ...
